Fall 2014 Sign-ups now open

Sign-ups are now enabled for the Fall 2014 season.

Level 3 and higher referees may now sign up for games.
Level 1 and higher referees may start signing up on Friday, August 29th at 5:00pm.
Level 0 referees may start signing up on Sunday, August 31st at 5:00pm per the usual schedule.

Brendon Garabito will be assigning the U16/U19 games as usual.  Contact him with your availability if you are interested.

New Referee Training

JUSA will be training new referees during the JUSA Friendship Games on August 16th.

If you are a new referee and ae interested in refereeing for JUSA this fall and have not received an email in the last couple of days, send a message to referees@jusa.org so you can be added to the distribution list.

There will be additional training on August 23rd, but August 16th is the preferred date as those games are higher level and better for new referees.

How to Become a Referee

If you are interested in becoming a referee and joining JUSA for games this fall, see the “how to” guide here.

Read through the information and follow the instructions to register and take the online modules. If you choose the Grade 8 path, you will also attend a 4-hour Cal South field training session.

There is no minimum age although, typically, our youngest referees are usually at least 11 or 12.

Grade 9 referees can referee all JUSA Recreational and Signature matches up to U14. This level is recommended for referees 15 or 16 and under.
Grade 8 referees can referee all JUSA Recreational and Signature matches up to U19 and can choose to join other referee associations, as they gain experience, and referee all levels of Competitive (Club) youth matches.

Our new referee training is on August 16th and August 23rd. As a new referee, you must attend one of these dates in order to be entered into our online system to sign up for games this fall.

Playoff sign-ups for 5/17 & 5/18

Schedules are now loaded for Semi-Finals on Saturday 5/17 and Finals on 5/18.

Level 3 and Level 4 referees (and associated family members) may sign up now.
Level 2 referees (and associated family members) may sign up starting at 5pm on 5/9
Level 1 referees (and associated family members) may sign up starting at 5pm on 5/10
All level restrictions will be removed at 5pm on Sunday, 5/11 when Level 0 refs would normally be able to sign up.

There are six games at many fields on Saturday 5/17. Remember, FOUR games is the maximum, per referee.

If you sign up for finals on Sunday, please try to do a different division/pool than you sign up for on Saturday, for semifinals, where possible.

May 17/18

Playoffs will be the weekend of May 17th and 18th. Within the next week or two, at least 40 games will be added to the schedule on Saturday May 17th, as semifinals for U9 through U19 in addition to at least 20 finals on Sunday May 18th. Teams will be seeded after their games on May 11th.

There are already U7 and U8 games on the schedule for May 17th as these teams do not participate in playoffs. Only sign up for the U7/U8 games if you intend to stay on them. Do not fill those games and then ask to drop so you can move over to U9 through U19 playoff games. The playoff games will be added – just be patient. There will be special sign-up restrictions put in place, once the schedules are released, for the higher level referees to sign up first.

DOGSO

Denial of an Obvious Goal Scoring Opportunity by either deliberately handling the ball or by a foul/infraction that results in a free kick is punishable by a red card.  Guest instructor Lee Eichenbaum from NOCRA covered this topic in our March monthly meeting.

PRO’s Play of the Week this week  provides 3 videos of both DOGSO and non-DOGSO scenarios and gives a great graphic illustrating Direction of play, one of the  four “D” criteria referees use to determine if a scenario is an OGSO.  Remember, as the age and skill of the players gets lower, play must be at a narrower angle of attack and even closer to the goal before the opportunity can be considered obvious.

Spring League – Week 4 – Important Info

importantinfoGame Cards
Referees are asked to place the signed game cards from every game in the field lockers for the rest of the season.
Sometimes there are reasons for the league to consult these game cards after the game has been completed.  If they are returned to the coaches to take home, then this is not possible.
No Card, No Play
Last weekend at least 4 or 5 players were not allowed to play due to not having a valid, laminated, photo player card.  The coaches are all aware that this is a requirement so there should be no excuses and no reasons for any exceptions.
